Amanah demands Muhyiddin be held to account for ‘treason’

 

PRIME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has shown his arrogance towards Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah with his statement that the government acted legally in revoking the emergency ordinances, said Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

“Amanah demands Muhyiddin to be held accountable for acts of treason against the Agong, and for all dishonesty by the cabinet against the supremacy of the federal constitution and the institutions of Parliament.

“Therefore, Amanah demands Muhyiddin and all members of his cabinet resign immediately, and seek forgiveness from the king,” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister’s Office said the government had acted in accordance with legal provisions and the constitution in revoking emergency ordinances on July 21.

The PMO said the cabinet on July 21 decided not to extend the emergency upon its expiry on August 1, and following that, to advise the Agong to revoke all the related ordinances.

“On July 23, the prime minister had informed the Agong about cabinet’s advice to revoke the ordinances, and urged the king to give his assent,” said the statement.

However, the Agong said that he was not informed of the government’s intention to do so and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Parliament) Takiyuddin Hassan’s announcement in the House misled lawmakers.

He also said that Takiyuddin’s remarks in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday were inaccurate.

On Monday, Takiyuddin announced that the Emergency Ordinances had been revoked by the government effective July 21. He said the decision was made in accordance with Article 150 (3) of the constitution.

Mohamad said Muhyiddin’s statement seemed to imply that the king did not understand the real situation and that the king was mistaken in stating that he was deeply saddened by the cabinet’s action.

Mohamad further pointed out that Takiyuddin had tried to place the blame for the current outcry at Pakatan Harapan’s door.

“In fact, from the outset the cabinet rejected the king’s suggestion to convene Parliament as decreed by Malay rulers on June 16.

“Although Parliament finally convened on July 26. What they (government) are trying to attempt is to avoid any debate on the emergency ordinance.

Mohamad said in Muhyiddin’s attempt to cling to power, he and his cabinet have neglected their responsibilities to the people and the country by ignoring and insulting the institutions of the king, Parliament and the constitution.

“In an environment where the people are facing an epidemic and economic crisis, Muhyiddin and his entire cabinet consisting of Bersatu, Umno, PAS, GPS and others have chosen to create a political crisis to cover up their failures.”
