Ronnie Liu fails to make cut at Selangor DAP polls

PETALING JAYA: Outspoken Selangor DAP veteran Ronnie Liu, who had previously criticised two party leaders over a bipartisan political cooperation, failed to make the cut at the state party leadership election today.

The Sungai Pelek assemblyman secured 17th spot after managing only 477 votes.

In August, Liu had criticised Damansara MP Tony Pua and Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming for accepting an olive branch by Muhyiddin Yassin when trying to save his premiership, after Umno decided to retract support for him as prime minister.

Gobind Singh Deo was retained as state chairman after he clinched the fifth spot with 615 votes. Ean Yong Hian Wah was named as Gobind’s deputy.

Selangor state assembly speaker Ng Suee Lim had the highest number of votes with 786, followed by Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han (699), Tiew Way Keng (667) and Kota Kemuning assemblyman V Ganabatirau (633).

Suee Lim and Ganabatirau were also named as the vice-chairman, while Sze Han was named the secretary. Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming was named state treasurer after securing the eight spot with 574 votes.

Dusun Tua assemblyman Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof was among those elected, securing 561 votes. Banting assemblyman Lau Weng San had 521 votes, putting him in the 13th spot.

Earlier today, Gobind said that the Selangor DAP was eyeing three additional seats at the next general election.

The seats are the Tanjung Karang parliamentary seat as well as the state seats of Semenyih and Selat Klang.

Gobind said the party was talking to its allies in Selangor PH on this matter. “Once we are given the chance to stand in those seats, we have to ensure we can win all the 18 seats,” he said, according to Malaysiakini.
